Not every major philanthropic organization begins with a formal mission statement. Colcom Foundation started as one woman’s response to a problem she saw clearly and most people did not. Cordelia S. May began supporting family planning in 1952, at age twenty three, because she believed human population growth was quietly reshaping the natural world in ways that could not be sustained. Colcom Foundation’s work has also facilitated proactive environmental advocacy and protection by groups, including the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, WeConservePA, Westmoreland Land Trust, Protect PT, and Fair Shake Environmental Legal Services.
Turning Concern Into Structure
It took more than four decades for that early concern to become a formal institution. May established Colcom Foundation in 1996, when she was sixty eight years old. The foundation gained its full financial footing after her death in 2005, when it received the funding needed to operate at scale. From that point forward, Colcom Foundation has worked to translate May’s original concerns into grants supporting conservation, environmental projects, and regional cultural assets.
A Perspective Ahead of Its Time
May frequently observed that gradual, incremental growth is difficult to perceive from one day to the next, even though its cumulative force can overwhelm ecological systems. She spent her life trying to draw attention to that dynamic before it became conventional wisdom. Colcom Foundation credits her with recognizing the drama of population and environment decades before it reached public discourse, comparing her to other early reformers who were misunderstood in their own eras, including advocates for gender equality and civil rights.
Today, Colcom Foundation’s grantmaking honors that foresight, along with the dignity and compassion May brought to her work.
