Not every lesson in wealth management comes from a textbook, and much of what Justin Nelson has learned over nearly thirty years came from client relationships that tested his patience and his integrity in equal measure. Leading by Example
Nelson oversees a group of 20 professionals managing more than $11 billion in assets for clients in hedge funds, private equity, real estate, and financial services. Rather than treating that scale as the headline, he emphasizes the relational habits that got the team there in the first place.
“When there is some type of break there, the first thing you can do with anybody is admit it,” Justin Nelson JP Morgan tells colleagues, a principle he applies to his own conduct before expecting it from anyone else. Owning a mistake quickly, he argues, prevents small issues from becoming permanent ruptures.

Nelson also encourages his team to resist the instinct to simply agree with clients. “It’s important to be close enough where we can still politely criticize each other and have a discussion where you can tell someone how you feel,” he says, describing candor as a form of respect rather than confrontation.
For younger advisors at JP Morgan, that guidance can be harder to apply than it sounds, especially with high profile clients accustomed to deference. Justin Nelson’s own client roster, built over decades of honest conversations, suggests the harder path is also the one that lasts.
Mentorship, in Nelson’s view, works best when it comes with real examples rather than abstract principles. He points junior colleagues toward specific moments in his own career when admitting a mistake or pushing back on a client’s request paid off years later, evidence that the lessons he teaches are not theoretical but drawn directly from decades of practice.
